Og King of Bashan -- The Original O.G.

See, here's my point on a platter --

Why's it always the devout non-Jews that come up with the most hilarious Biblical illustrations the world has ever known???

Anyway, to check out some details about the real Og, who is among my favorite "Enemies of Israel" because, for all of his brash and swagger (and breathtaking stature), his name translates directly from the Hebrew as "Cake," have a look at this d'var Torah from Yeshivat Tiferet Yerushalaim, which I ain't never heard of till now -- it's the most comprehensive description I've been able to find yet. Can you find (or write) a better one? Leave a comment!

That website, while funny, is replete with inaccuracies.

Anyways, the Pirkei dRebbi Eliezer says that Og was the same person as Eliezer, the servant of Avraham. The Rada"l (the commentary on Pirkei dRebbi Eliezer) asks a few questions on this explanation and answers them.

yaak -- i know it's inaccurate. in fact, some of the stuff on their site takes on an anti-semitic tone (or at least, a contemporary flavoring of "all jews hate jesus") that i find quite abominable, but hey -- you gotta admit that the concept + execution, if not flawless, is pretty darn funny, and i've never seen us Jews come up with biblical-Education stuff like this for our own kids -- why not?!?

what are the questions that the Rada"l asks and answers? you kinda left us hanging there -- i want to know! even tho' Og was our enemy, i find midrash about him to be fascinating and ever-expanding -- his appearance in DafYomi a few pages back was quite interesting. please continue, if not for me, then for my readers!

‘Og is cool because he was one of the last of the Refa’im. The Refa’im rocked the world. As far as can be told from Biblical Paleo-Anthropology, they seem to have been here (=Israel) first, before the Cana‘anites, us, or anybody else arrived. I live in their valley. 'Nuff said.

Long live the Aboriginal Ghosts!
